The puppy and the baby

I've had quite a few inquiries into how Lucy has handled having a baby in the house. She was definitely confused and concerned at first, but I think she is a great puppy-big-sister.
To start the confusion, I was gone for 3 days when the baby was born, so Lucy was already worried and confused from that. Kenny only came home 2 or 3 times each day to let her out and play with her, but she spent most of those days in the kennel. Needless to say, she was VERY excited when we got home, and probably wasn't paying much attention to the bundle I was carrying.
Once she realized Kenny and I were both making a big deal of the blankets in my hand, she got a little more interested. When she heard hiccups coming from on top of the bed she got VERY interested:

What is making that sound? Mom, please fix that noise.
I don't think it took her too long to realize that there was a another human, and we love that human. And then came the whining. She whined a lot at first- not in a I-need-attention-and-am-jealous way, but in a is-the-baby-OK-can-I-please-inspect-him way. You see, Lucy loves to "inspect" the baby. We have to bring the baby within noses reach, or leave him on the edge of the bed (with supervision of course), and Lucy will give him a thorough sniffing:

She's learned she isn't allowed to lick his face but sniffing the diaper is fair game. It's so cute, she follows me around and just "hovers" near the baby all the time. She has to always be near him:

But not TOO near him- she's too nervous to get too close. The other night I had him on the floor for "belly time" (trying to strengthen those neck muscles) and I sat down next to him to watch and be near him. I sat down, Lucy sits down. I lay down, Lucy lays down. I sit back up, Lucy sits back up. All the while we're both watching the baby closely.
All in all, I think Lucy is happy as a big puppy-sister and will do a good job of watching out for Daniel and keeping him safe.

What a good puppy sister.

On a random note, your baby is far fatter than mine.

This is Ben. That's awesome that Lucy is so cute with the baby. Now you have a built in ferocious guard puppy.

Those pictures are adorable.

They will be best buddies in just a few short months - well, maybe not after he learns that ears and tails are good to pull on! Very cute!
